Many food handlers assume that once gloves are on, food safety risks disappear. This is a dangerous misconception. Gloves are an effective barrier against contamination, but only when used correctly. Putting on a fresh pair of gloves over unwashed hands defeats their purpose entirely. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before gloving up.
Gloves should be changed frequently throughout your shift. The moment you switch tasks—such as moving from handling raw meat to preparing ready-to-eat food—your gloves must be replaced. Similarly, gloves should be changed after touching your face, handling money, taking out trash, or stepping away from your workstation. Reusing gloves or wearing the same pair for hours creates a breeding ground for bacteria.
Another common mistake is thinking gloves eliminate the need to avoid cross-contamination. Even with gloves on, touching contaminated surfaces then touching food can still spread harmful pathogens. Treat gloved hands as you would bare hands: keep them clean, change them often, and never rely on them as a shortcut. Proper glove usage is a simple habit that makes a significant difference in protecting your customers and your reputation.
